Satellite images of Sanya Naval Base in south China’s Hainan Province revealed two unknown vehicles on the platform of the base, in what are believed to be unmanned drone submarines, the first indication of Chinese naval expansion in a major program not reported before.
Satellite imagery, taken on July 31, showed two submarines, believed to be very large unmanned submarines known as “XLUUVs”.
According to navel news, the submarines have been present since March and April 2021, but have only been discovered.
One submarine is about 16 metres (52 ft) long and 2 metres (6.4 ft) wide, and has a streamlined arc, while the other appears to be less slender and 18 metres (59 ft) long
. It is similar to the United States Navy submarine Orca XLUV. Sanya is part of important Chinese naval bases on the South China Sea and is a major home for submarines
. XLUUV vehicles are widely seen as key maritime technologies that could form future conflicts, and can perform intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance tasks
. China has been building and modernizing its navy over the past 20 years,
including a number of sophisticated underwater vehicles, some of which have not been publicly recognized.
